Unravel and Start Anew

In the world of crochet, “unravel” is a dreaded term. It means you have to undo what you have so lovingly and patiently created to, usually, make corrections. Sometimes it is just a couple of stitches back, other times it is a couple of miles long!

The picture was supposed to be a dress for my daughter. When I started making it, she was only two. Now, she's three and of course bigger. Plus, I think I used the wrong kind of yarn here. Cotton - already heavy and not even half way done. So now that I am interested in the zero-waste lifestyle (though more like reduced-waste lifestyle for me, for now), I unravelled the cotton yarns to turn them into reusable facial cotton pads!Turning and old unfinished work into reusable cotton pads!

To unravel is physically very easy, all you have to do is to keep on pulling the yarn. It can be a psychologically painful process, though. To watch your hard work and hours spent go to waste. Although, it is necessary, so you can have a wonderful output. We never unravel to make something look worse. Always, we unravel to make our work look lovelier, a more beautiful piece of craft. We can also unravel a work, not just to rework but to create an entirely different piece, or pieces, if we feel stuck or messed up too much on the other.

Plus, I think I used the wrong kind of yarn here. 100% Cotton – already heavy and not even half way done. So now that I am interested in the zero-waste lifestyle (though more like reduced-waste lifestyle), I unravelled the cotton yarns to turn them into reusable facial cotton pads!

The same is true in life. Sometimes we mess up, sometimes we feel stuck, not growing nor progressing. Sometimes we feel as if we are not in the place we want, not in the place where we could feel fulfilled and where we could better serve our purpose. Remember, you don’t have to stay there. Remember that you always have the option to unravel and go back to start over. You also have the option to unravel and create something new!

The New Year is a great reminder for all of us that no matter our age, our nationality or state in life. We can always start something fresh, something new, always a better version.

Happy New Year! Happy unraveling and starting something new! 🙂

  1. Hi Emile,
Missed this post during the ‘frenzy’.
Reminds me so much of mum and how so many times she would decide to completely Reknit a different article from the original. This process reflected her life in so many ways.
I particularly think of her at this, my time of rebirth and renewal for 2019.
Happy new year to you and yours.
    🙂

  2. Hello, dear Emile!
My knitting is actually really bad, so in order to unravel I have to knit first… .
But I totally love your beautiful thoughts and feel the same.
Have a Happy New Year and the entire happiness in the world!

    1. Oh that’s something I always wanted to learn but somehow couldn’t get around to even starting. I don’t even know how to cast! I envy people (in a good way) who know how to knit, even though not an expert at it. 🙂

Thank you very much and happy 2019 to us all. 🙂

    1. Oh thank you, that’s so lovely to hear. But Bushra, you’re the queen of creativity in the home, it will be so easy for you. But I must warn you that it is time consuming, too. I learned it in highschool and from my mom, recently rekinled my love for it and relearned via YouTube! Great tutorials from Bag-O-Day Crochet, Sewrella and Bella Coco.
